Love is one of the most intense expressions of positive emotion. Perhaps more than any other emotion, love is the subject of music, literature, poetry, and art. Every person searches for love in his or her own way. Human beings often equate love with sex, and these two concepts dominate much of our personal worlds. Because of its power, the concept of Love is even used in the marketplace: we see commercials using love and relationship based imagery to sell automobiles, vacations, and even toothpaste!
Love often escapes definition, as there are many types of love. The love that is shown between adults is clearly a strong form of emotional behavior and is often accompanied by pronounced visceral activity such increased heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and speech.
Whatever type of love we may be describing, the dominant feeling is still an attraction to another person and a dedication, often of an unselfish nature, to that person. The feeling of love is generally heightened when our love is returned by the object of our emotion, whether it be a parent, child, husband, wife or potential lover.
In romantic and marital love, sexual compatibility is of basic importance. Marriage and relationships can create many tensions, such as conflicting moods or opinions, financial burdens, emotional exchange and relationships with the external world. Frequently, love is not enough to see a relationship through to fulfillment. However, love is a good place to start.
